EcoTracker - Compatibility and Requirements in Austria

Published:

This article deals with the specifics of choosing an EcoTracker for Austrian customers

If you want to use your EcoTracker in Austria, there are a few important specifics. Since in Austria the respective network operator determines which interface (IR or P1) is enabled for customers on your electricity meter, a brief preliminary check is crucial for a smooth start.

Which EcoTracker suits you?

The choice of the right device primarily depends on your network area. Please refer to the following overview to select the appropriate model for your meter:

Network Operator / Region Recommended EcoTracker
Netz Oberösterreich EcoTracker IR
Wiener Netze EcoTracker IR
Netz Burgenland EcoTracker IR or EcoTracker P1
All other network areas EcoTracker P1

Special feature Netz Burgenland: Here you are flexible, as this network operator supports both interface types. You can freely choose which EcoTracker best suits your installation.

Information without guarantee: Since the guidelines and interface approvals of network operators can change at any time, we recommend that you briefly check with your network operator before purchase which interface is currently enabled for your meter.

The GUEK Security Key

In addition to choosing the right interface, there is another important requirement in Austria: To read the data from your electricity meter, you need a special security key called the GUEK (Device-Independent Decryption Key).

  • Where do you get the GUEK?
    • The key is provided to you by your responsible network operator.
  • Why is it needed?
    • Your smart meter encrypts the data of the customer interface for security reasons. Without the GUEK, the EcoTracker cannot decrypt this data and therefore cannot record it.

Your schedule for installation

To ensure everything runs smoothly during commissioning, it is best to proceed in the following order:

  • Clarify interface: Contact your network operator before purchase or check their website to find out which customer interface (IR or P1) is active on your electricity meter.
  • Request GUEK: Apply for the GUEK security key for your meter from your network operator. This is often possible via the network operator’s customer portal.
  • Choose EcoTracker: Based on the information from your network operator, select the appropriate EcoTracker variant from our shop.
  • Setup: Once you have both the EcoTracker and the GUEK, you can start the setup in the everHome app. Simply enter the GUEK in the configuration interface.

If you are unsure which interface is installed on your meter, contact your network operator before purchasing your EcoTracker. If you have further questions or need help with the setup, our support team is of course always happy to assist you!
